Modernism and US Television News Design since 1940
Museum of Modern Art Library, New York and City University of New York Graduate Center
Television journalism and modern design share ideals of rationality, objectivity and utility. Both institutions embrace technology in pursuit of speed and machine vision. Both aspire to editorial and technical transparence. This essay examines the development of US television news design in relation to the modernist ethos, focusing on choices to reveal, conceal and symbolize the production apparatus. I argue that the visual vocabulary of television news was established early and remains durable, constituting an International Style. Since this style emerged largely outside design discourse, this article looks to accounts of decision makers, analysing intentions and the resulting forms, especially as they relate to modernist ideals.
