The Journal of Design History enters its twenty-second year of publication with a new look, a larger and more open format designed to give greater prominence to the images so important to the understanding and appreciation of design. Illustrations may also be reproduced in colour where this is most appropriate to what is being discussed. We hope readers will find the new design appealing, both in print and on screen.

Our new look also makes more evident the relationship between the Journal and the Design History Society (www.designhistorysociety.org). In 1987, the Society, a charitable trust registered in the UK, entered into partnership with Oxford University Press to publish a journal which would represent and advance the historical understanding of design in all its forms and explore how its cultural, social, economic and political significance has registered in different contexts and periods. Design History Society programmes have grown in parallel with the success of the Journal, to the 21-year archive to which its members enjoy free online access.

Over two decades, the global expansion of interest in design has registered in the pages of the Journal of Design History. It now appears in two and a half thousand institutions on six continents, with a broad distribution of authors, reviewers and advisers as well as readers, supported by online access (www.jdh.oxfordjournals.org) and a Web-based editorial system (www.manuscriptcentral.com/jdh). The Journal now welcomes expertise for its process of peer review and the submission of papers in languages other than English, for our programme of translation. Readers can contribute to debate directly by commenting on articles in the online edition.

The Journal of Design History has engaged with research on design in a range of cognate disciplines, often through special issues, and its contents are indexed in both arts and social science reference services. Besides publishing full-length articles based on substantial original research, the Journal aims to articulate the subject through essays that refocus historical perspective on design practice and design education; appraisals of design archives, collections and museology; substantial reviews and review essays; and original source materials of exceptional interest.

We hope that you will enjoy the Journal of Design History in its new format, and that you will respond to its contents, contribute to its features and offer to join in its editorial and review processes. We welcome proposals for thematic special issues and are currently particularly seeking to develop special issues relating to the history of design education, the re-appropriation of tradition in design and design for sustainability.
